PAAOHN History

Connecting with our OHN history: Betty Moulder

Occupational health nurses are tasked with keeping workforces free of injury through prevention and restoration of health to those who have been become ill or injured as a result of a workplace incident or related hazard.  Betty Moulder, a nurse from Philadelphia, recognized this need in 1888 and was hired to care for coal miners and their families by a group of Pennsylvania coal mining companies. Betty Moulder is often viewed as the first professional nurse in the field of occupational health nursing. With an influence such as Betty Moulder, it is no wonder that Pennsylvania has been referred to as the birthplace of occupational health nursing.

Now it's time for you to be a part of occupational health nursing history. Share your story. As occupational health nurses we often find ourselves working independently and it is unusual to be recognized for the accomplishments we are making every day in keeping our workforces safe and healthy. Consider applying for (or nominating a peer) for the Betty Moulder Award, this award recognizes a nurse clinician who has demonstrated excellence in clinical practice and innovation in occupational health nursing.

We need you!  Our local chapters are the grass roots of our state.  I realize that your time may be limited and you hesitate to commit to an elected position.  However, participation takes many forms including meeting attendance, committee work, or just volunteering for a one-time special task or project.

Please consider sharing your talents and skills to help us become more successful.  Reach out to your local chapter President.  Even working on a small task would be appreciated.
