President's Message

Dear Fellow Members:

As I begin the final year of my term, I am privileged to be your President as we celebrate 50 years as a state chapter.  The Board is already planning a special event for you during this year’s Annual Conference at the Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono.  It would be terrific if everyone could attend, even if it’s for one day.

2012 is a year of celebrations as AAOHN also marks its 70th year anniversary.  Look for details on what’s planned at the AAOHN Conference in Nashville, TN.

As Chair of AAOHN’s Chapter Services Committee, I want to share that we plan to host a 1-hour webinar for members and chapter leaders on the topic ‘Successful Member Meetings:  If You Build Them, They Will Come’.  This webinar is slated for March 21 at 12:00 Noon (ET) featuring our very own Southwest PA and NEAOHN’s North of Boston Chapters as presenters.  As an officer at both the state and local levels, I realize first-hand the challenges and struggles chapters encounter in member recruitment, retention, and meeting attendance.  This webinar will describe the key elements of a successful membership recruitment plan, identify strategies and tools the OHN can use to promote successful membership meetings, and discuss success stories.

If you haven’t already heard, AAOHN has entered into the social media realm through Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  Visit the AAOHN home page and ‘like’ us to follow online.  AAOHN also has a YouTube site under development.  Our very own Kim Olszewski is leading this effort.

As you may all know by now, the AAOHN Journal has a new name – Workplace Safety and Health: Promoting Environments Conducive to Well-Being & Productivity.  Check out its first issue in January for the CNE article co-authored by Kim Olszewski and myself titled’, ‘A Comprehensive Review of the HealthyPeople 2020 Occupational Safety and Health Objectives – Part 1: Tools for the Occupational Health Nurse in Goal Attainment’.  Part 2 will appear in the February issue.

Our current membership is at 270.  Please stay connected by renewing your membership.  Visit www.aaohn.org and click the green JOIN/RENEW button at the top left corner.

Finally, it is with sincere sadness that we say goodbye to Judy Rudinsky, a longstanding member, colleague and dear friend to the Board, who passed away at home on December 22, 2011.   PAAOHN has made a donation in her memory to the American Lung Association. Please see her tribute in this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Carol Parks, RN, BSN, COHN-S/CM, FAAOHN
PAAOHN President
